The First Ultra Project

Get to the start line prepared. Finish strong.

Coaching for your first ultra or multi-stage race — especially if you're not quite sure you're ready, but you're committed to finding out.

What you get

Four pillars, one programme.

The plan is structured, but not rigid. You won't get a PDF and a "good luck." You'll get a coach who knows what your race feels like at hour fourteen, on day four.

Time-based training that bends around your life. Regular check-ins that adjust to how you're feeling. Mindset work — because that's where most ultras are won and lost. And the race-specific details nobody else explains.

/01
Training plan, your way.
Time-based, not mileage-bound.

Built around the life you actually have — work, family, travel, jet lag, the lot. Structured properly, scaled sensibly, and never about punishing yourself for the sake of it.

  • Personalised monthly schedule
  • Strength & mobility built in — not bolted on
  • Travel-aware structure with room to flex
  • Race-specific blocks for terrain & conditions
/02
Monthly guidance.
Real coaching, not a rigid plan.

Structured check-ins each month where we review what's actually happening and adjust accordingly — not what a plan said should happen.

  • One hour per month, or 30-minute sessions every two weeks
  • Structured review and forward planning
  • Direct messaging for questions in between
  • Honest feedback on how you're responding
  • Adjustments when life inevitably gets in the way

Because consistent, honest review is what actually moves things forward.

/03
Mindset, properly.
The part that really matters.

Most ultras aren't lost in your legs. They're lost in the dark hours when finishing feels a long way off and the voice in your head tells you to stop. We build the one that keeps you moving.

  • Managing pre-race nerves and doubt
  • Tactics for the inevitable low points
  • Pacing your head, not just your watch
  • Setting expectations that actually hold up on race day
/04
Race prep.
The unglamorous specifics.

Kit, nutrition, strategy — and the reality of multi-stage racing. The details that don't show up in generic plans, because most people writing them haven't had to deal with them.

  • Kit review and testing strategy
  • Nutrition planning — including multi-day reality
  • Race-day pacing and checkpoint approach
  • Mandatory kit, logistics, and everything around it

Honest answers

Frequently asked.

That's exactly who this is for. You don't need to be an ultra runner first — that's the point of the process. We build you up properly, so you get to the start line ready, not broken or burnt out. Most people start unsure. That's normal.
No. I'm not fast either — and most of the people I work with aren't. Ultras aren't about speed. They're about keeping going when it gets hard. That's the part we focus on.
No — that's exactly what the coaching is built around. Real life, not ideal conditions. I train and race around travel, time zones, and weeks where things don't go to plan. We adjust. We don't panic.
That's the niche. Multi-stage racing is different — kit, nutrition, recovery, sleep, footcare, and the mental load of going again day after day. I've raced them through events with the Racing the Planet series, Global Limits, and Beyond the Ultimate. It's the part most generic plans don't cover — and where most people struggle.
Because it depends on your race, your timeline, and how much support you actually need. It's better to have a quick conversation and give you a clear, honest answer than guess with a number on a page. Set packages are coming — for now, just get in touch and we'll talk it through.
I'll tell you. If I'm not the right coach for you, I'll say — or point you in a better direction. There's no value in forcing it. The honest answer is the only useful one.
